THE AIM

of the International Academic Conference of the Faculty of Management and Social Communication of the Jagiellonian University

„Pro-quality restructuring of management in higher education"

25 – 26th June 2012

      The rating position of Polish colleges and universities in the world is distant. The 293th place in  the world ranking in January 2012 of the best university in Poland – the Jagiellonian University – is not sufficient, regardless of what we think about the rating criteria used in the world. Research that has been conducted by research teams (under the supervision of Tadeusz Wawak) since 2008 confirms that the basic causes of this state of affairs are low public and private expenditure on higher education and low quality of university management. In the conditions of the world recession, huge and constantly growing Polish debt and government budget deficit, colleges and universities need to find a way of self-financing their development. The starting point of improving their functioning must be pro-quality restructuring of management in all higher schools, realizing the aims of the amendment law concerning higher education, started formally on 18th March 2011 and the decisions connected with the research process as well as the requirements of the European Union. The requirements concern also Ukraine and other countries of Europe and the world. The aim of these actions must be constant improvement of the quality of management, increased quality of education and increased results of academic research. These issues were the subject of interest of the research program „Pro-quality restructuring of management in higher education" realized (under the supervision of Tadeusz Wawak) between 2009 and 2012 at the Faculty of Management and Social Communication of the Jagiellonian University with the participation of professors and doctors form the cooperating universities and colleges from Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Algeria, USA and Germany.

The aim of the conference is:

  • to present the results of this international research;
  • to discuss present problems of higher education development in Poland, Europe and the world;
  • to show the direction and scope of further international research in improving the quality of management of the universities and colleges of Poland, Ukraine and other countries;
  • to take collective action in implementing the decisions of the Bologna Process and following the recommendations of the European Union as part of the proposed project „EUROUNIWER 2014".

The conference will focus on selected problems of management in higher schools (Session I ) and the challenges of quality management in higher schools (Session II) as well as further cooperation („EUROUNIWER 2014" Seminar).

       The international research conducted between 2009 and 2012, summarized during the Conference, as well as two extensive monographs devoted to it („The challenges of quality management" and „The quality of management in higher education") were fully financed by the Department of Applied Economics of the Faculty of Management and Social Communication, whereas the Conference and the prepared joint publication (edited by Tadeusz Wawak) – Pro-quality restructuring of management in higher education", which will contain papers of the research participants, are financed by the Faculty of Management and Social Communication and the Institute of Economics and Management of the Jagiellonian University.
